Cornhole boards: dimensions and quality

The heart of the game consists of two cornhole boards. In recreational play you’ll see all kinds of sizes, but if you want to play seriously, it’s wise to choose regulation dimensions.

Standard cornhole board

  • Length: about 120 cm;
  • Width: about 60 cm;
  • Hole: round, 15 cm in diameter, slightly below the top edge;
  • Height: low at the front, higher at the back for an inclined slope.

A good board is sturdy, splinter-free and does not bend when a bag lands on it. For a consistent playing experience, it’s best to choose wooden boards, such as our cornhole sets.

Cornhole bags: material and feel

The bags largely determine the feel of the game. They should feel good in the hand, fly stably and slide or stop predictably on the board.

Characteristics of good cornhole bags

  • Size: about 15 × 15 cm;
  • Weight: around 450 grams;
  • Filling: plastic pellets (stay dry and don’t clump together);
  • Fabric: durable, sturdy fabric, often with two different sides.

Many modern bags have a “fast” side and a “slow” side. You use these to make a bag slide extra or stop earlier, depending on your strategy. In our cornhole bags collection you’ll find different speeds and designs.

The setup of the boards

The distance between the boards is important for the level of difficulty and the fairness of the game.

Distance for adults

For adults, the standard distance between the front edges of the boards is 8.23 meters (27 ft). That is the distance you’ll also find in official competitions.

Distance for children and beginners

Are you playing with children, or do you want to keep the game accessible? Then you can easily place the boards closer together, for example at 4 to 6 meters. This way players have more control over their throws and it stays fun for everyone.

Playing field and surface

You can play cornhole almost anywhere, as long as the surface is flat enough and you have enough space to throw safely.

Suitable surfaces

  • Lawn or grass field;
  • Patio, driveway or sidewalk;
  • Sports hall or other indoor floor.

On very soft or uneven surfaces, boards can wobble or bags can bounce differently than you expect. Always try to place the board as stably as possible.

Pitcher’s box: where do you stand when you throw?

On either side of each board is an imaginary area: the pitcher’s box. This is where you stand when you throw.

  • You remain on the same side of the board throughout an entire game;
  • You may not step over the front of the board while you throw;
  • The bag must be released before the line.

In official matches these areas are often marked. In the garden you can simply agree on an imaginary line.

Playing safely and comfortably

A good cornhole playing field is not only flat, but also safe and comfortable.

  • Ensure there is enough space behind and beside the boards;
  • Preferably don’t place the game directly against a wall or fence;
  • Watch out for obstacles such as steps, fire pits or garden furniture;
  • Play at dusk with sufficient lighting.

This way you prevent accidents and keep the focus on the game and not on your surroundings.

Step by step: creating your first cornhole setup

  1. Place the two boards opposite each other.
  2. Measure the distance between the front edges (preferably 8.23 meters).
  3. Check whether the boards are stable and do not wobble.
  4. Divide the eight bags into two colors, four per team.
  5. Agree on who starts and from which side you will be throwing.

All set? Then you can move on to the next step: the full cornhole rules and scoring.

Frequently asked questions about cornhole equipment and setup

What are the dimensions of an official cornhole board?

An official cornhole board is about 120 cm long and 60 cm wide, with a round hole of 15 cm in diameter, slightly below the top edge. The board is slanted, lower at the front and higher at the back.

How far apart should cornhole boards be?

For adults, the standard distance between the front edges of the boards is 8.23 meters (27 ft). If you’re playing with children or beginners, you can shorten the distance to 4–6 meters to make the game easier.

How heavy are cornhole bags?

Regulation cornhole bags weigh about 450 grams and are 15 × 15 cm in size. They are usually filled with plastic pellets, so they don’t clump together and continue to perform well in varying weather conditions.

On what surface is it best to play cornhole?

You can play cornhole on a flat lawn, a patio, driveway, sports floor or other even surface. As long as the boards stand stable and the bags don’t bounce excessively, you can play just fine.

Do I need special tournament equipment to play cornhole?

No, to get started you only need two boards and eight bags. If you want to move towards tournament or competition level, it is advisable to choose boards and bags with regulation dimensions and high-quality materials.
